- How early should I arrive at the airport?
-
Airlines recommend at least 90 minutes prior for domestic and two hours international. Always bear in mind that in certain peak travel seasons it is best to allow for more time as check-in lines and security lines can be over crowded. Better to be safe than sorry.
- Do I need to show I.D. for airline ticket purchases?
-
When purchasing airline tickets you will now need your legal name as it appears on the form of identification you will be showing. You will also need your date of birth.
- How much luggage can I take?
-
You are allowed two checked bags each weighing no more than 50 pounds for domestic travel and 70 pounds for international travel. One carry on and one purse or laptop.
- What documents will I need to travel outside the U.S.?
-
Proof of citizenship I.D.s such as driver's licenses are no longer accepted for travel outside the United States. All travel outside the U.S. requires a current passport which needs at least 6 months validity from the time of travel. Certain destinations require a Visa which may have to be obtained prior to travel. Always check the requirements as they do tend to change!
- Can my child travel alone and what is a safe age?
-
The answer varies with all children and parents, as a rule children can travel as unaccompanied minors as early as six years old however if your child is not mature it is best not to let them travel alone. Airlines charge for the unaccompanied minor service and this also varies with airlines and destinations.
- Can I take alcoholic beverages on my trip with me?
- In most cases you are not allowed to take alcohol onto cruise ships and definitely not for consumption on airplanes. It is best to check the rules before breaking them.
- What is the legal drinking age?
-
That varies with countries as well. Check with the tourist board or agent before breaking the law. Jails in other countries are not a good place to spend your time.
- How early should I book my vacation and what if the price changes?
-
It is usually in your favor to book early especially at peak times i.e. Christmas, Spring Break, summer vacations. You should be aware that if it is done with a package like a Hawaii trip you will probably only pay a deposit and pay the balance 45 days prior. If the fares were to go down you could get the lower fare if you bought the change cancel waiver. On regular airline tickets, the fare would have to go down enough to cover the penalties imposed by the airline and it would have to be available for purchase in the lowest category. Some times its better to know you have the seats on the itinerary you want than to worry about the price.
- Should I buy cancellation insurance?
-
On airline tickets, it is a personal choice. The airlines generally allow you to cancel and rebook travel anywhere they fly within one year of date of purchase of your ticket with a penalty. I always recommend insurance for packages, tours and cruises as the repercussions are not always good if you have to cancel. If a policy is offered it is usually a third party insurance and it is best to call the company and find out all of the inclusions. Some companies offer cancellation waivers which allow for cancel or change for any reason.
- Why should I use a travel agent?
-
As a travel agent, we have access to many products and companies which we know are reputable. We also have experience in selling destinations and know the nuances of them. In my case, with continuing education being very important to me I try to keep abreast of the changes in the industry as well as I have personal contacts in many hotels and tour companies which can offer my clients added value items such as upgraded rooms when available or amenities.
- How do I know how to pick a travel agent?
-
It is always good to work with someone you trust. Your experience should start out positive from the planning of your vacation all the way through your welcome home call. Having an agent who is knowledgeable and who puts the time and energy into certifications also helps. A referral from a friend or relative is a good way to meet an agent.
